Next up in our spotlight is the Southeast New Hampshire Habitat for Humanity.
When people think of Habitat for Humanity, they often picture volunteers swinging hammers and raising walls. But here in Southeast New Hampshire, the mission goes far beyond construction. Southeast New Hampshire Habitat for Humanity (SENH Habitat) is helping local families build brighter futures through affordable homeownership, community partnerships, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
Headquartered in Portsmouth, NH, SENH Habitat has been serving families throughout Seacoast NH, Strafford County, and much of Rockingham County since 1994. As a nonprofit organization, its mission is simple but powerful: eliminate poverty housing by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. To date, the organization has built or rehabilitated more than 30 homes, providing stable housing for more than 120 local residents.
Building Homeownership Together
Unlike many traditional housing assistance programs, SENH Habitat partners with families in Southeast NH who need affordable housing but are above the state assistance income level and fall within 30% to 60% of the area’s median income guidelines. Rather than simply receiving a home, partner families play an active role in the process by helping build their own homes alongside volunteers. As they work, they earn sweat equity hours before purchasing their home with a 0% interest-free mortgage, creating a pathway to long-term stability and homeownership.
This unique model creates something much bigger than a house. It builds financial stability, confidence, and long-term independence while strengthening neighborhoods throughout Southeast NH.
Serving Communities Across Seacoast New Hampshire
SENH Habitat serves communities throughout Strafford County and many towns across Rockingham County, including Portsmouth, Dover, Rochester, Exeter, Hampton, Rye, Greenland, Newington, Newmarket, Raymond, Seabrook, and many others. Whether families live in bustling downtown neighborhoods or smaller rural communities, the organization works to expand access to affordable, quality housing across the region.
Their current construction efforts in Rochester continue that commitment, helping create new opportunities for local families while addressing one of the biggest challenges facing Seacoast NH today: affordable housing.
More Than Home Construction
Many residents know SENH Habitat through its popular NH ReStore in nearby Newington, NH. The nonprofit home improvement store accepts donations of gently used furniture, appliances, cabinets, lighting, building materials, and home décor, then resells them at affordable prices. Every purchase and donation helps fund Habitat’s mission throughout Southeast New Hampshire.
In addition to building affordable homes, SENH Habitat helps existing homeowners through its Community Toolbox “Fix-It” Program. The program mobilizes trained volunteers to complete basic home repairs that promote safety, health, and accessibility, helping neighbors remain safely in their homes. Projects may include building wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and handrails, repairing small porches and stairs, replacing rotting floors, sealing drafty windows and doors, and making other accessibility improvements for qualifying homeowners.
A Community Built by Volunteers
One of the things that makes Habitat so unique is that every project depends on community involvement. Local businesses, faith organizations, civic groups, sponsors, and individual volunteers all play an important role in making affordable homeownership possible.
You don’t need construction experience to make a difference. Volunteers assist with everything from framing houses and painting walls to organizing donations, working at the ReStore, and supporting fundraising events. Every hour donated helps strengthen families across Seacoast NH.
