Nestled in the heart of Downtown Portsmouth, the New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) stands as a beacon of artistic expression and community engagement. As it commemorates its 85th anniversary in 2025, NHAA continues to uphold its mission of advancing public understanding and appreciation of the visual arts across the state.
A Legacy Rooted in History
The New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) was founded in the fall of 1940 by a small group of dedicated artists, including renowned figures such as Omer Lassonde, William Holst, and Lotte Jacobi. Their goal was simple yet profound: to create a welcoming space for artists to gather, exhibit their work, and foster a sense of community. Originally established as the state’s first and only nonprofit art association, NHAA has remained steadfast in its mission to support and showcase contemporary art throughout New Hampshire.
In its inaugural year, the association hosted just four exhibitions. Today, NHAA presents nearly 50 shows annually, both at its Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth and in satellite locations throughout New Hampshire. What began as a modest 50-member organization has grown into a thriving community of more than 275 artists.
In 1990, thanks to the vision of its leadership and the generosity of philanthropists, lenders, and donors, NHAA opened its permanent home at 136 State Street in Downtown Portsmouth. This central location has become a cultural cornerstone for the region, a place where artists and art lovers connect through dynamic exhibitions, programs, and events. The association’s longevity and continued growth reflect a deep and lasting commitment to the visual arts in New Hampshire.
The Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery
At the core of NHAA’s activities is the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, located at 136 State Street in Portsmouth. This gallery serves as the primary venue for NHAA’s exhibitions and events. Open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday, the gallery offers a rotating selection of artworks that reflect the diverse talents of its members.
Exhibitions That Inspire
NHAA hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, ranging from member shows to open juried competitions. Notable among these is the annual Omer T. Lassonde Open Juried Exhibition, which invites artists from across the region to submit their work for consideration. This exhibition honors Omer T. Lassonde, a founding member of NHAA and a significant figure in New Hampshire’s art history.
In addition to traditional exhibitions, NHAA embraces contemporary themes and diverse mediums. For example, the Contemporary Currents exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Portsmouth Historical Society, explores themes of experimentation and advocacy in art. In celebration of Pride Month, the NHAA proudly presents Transcendence, a regional exhibition honoring the rich spectrum of LGBTQIA+ experiences across New England.
Beyond exhibitions, NHAA is deeply committed to community engagement. The association organizes events such as the Second Saturday Speaker Series, which features talks and workshops by artists and art professionals. These events provide opportunities for learning and dialogue, fostering a deeper connection between artists and the public.
NHAA also participates in community events like the Portsmouth Pride Festival, where it hosts activities that celebrate diversity and inclusion. Such initiatives underscore NHAA’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.
Supporting Artists and the Arts
Membership with the New Hampshire Art Association offers artists a wealth of opportunities and resources to nurture their creative careers. Members gain exclusive access to a wide range of exhibition opportunities, including juried shows and an invitation to exhibit in their satellite galleries, allowing artists to showcase their work to diverse audiences. Beyond exhibitions, NHAA provides valuable professional development through workshops, artist talks, networking events, and educational programs designed to help artists refine their skills and navigate the art world.
NHAA’s membership community fosters meaningful connections among artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts, creating a supportive environment where creativity and collaboration thrive. Members also benefit from promotional opportunities through NHAA’s website, social media, and newsletters, helping artists increase their visibility within the regional art scene.
Supporting NHAA extends beyond artists, donors and volunteers play a crucial role in sustaining the organization’s vibrant programs and initiatives. The association relies on their generosity and dedication to continue offering exhibitions, educational events, and community outreach.
As NHAA celebrates its 85th year, it remains steadfast in its commitment to the arts and the community. The association continues to adapt and innovate, ensuring that the visual arts remain a vibrant and integral part of New Hampshire’s cultural landscape.
