Piscataqua Savings Bank is the proud supporter of over 100 Seacoast area nonprofits. We’re highlighting a few of the nonprofits doing incredible, critical work in our Portsmouth area community with our Seacoast Spotlight Series. Next up in our spotlight is Friends Forever International

Friends Forever International (FFI) is a global nonprofit based in Durham, New Hampshire focused on one core idea: when people from different backgrounds come together, they can learn how to lead, collaborate, and create change that lasts far beyond a single program. Based in New Hampshire, the organization brings together individuals from across the Seacoast, the United States, and internationally into shared learning environments where leadership is developed through experience, not just instruction.

At its heart, Friends Forever International is about building bridges between cultures, communities, and perspectives by investing in the next generation of global leaders.

A Local Seacoast Mission, Rooted in Global Connection

FFI’s mission is to help youth become the best version of themselves so they can make their community the best version of itself. The organization works with young people from diverse communities, locally and internationally, often bringing together individuals who may have very different lived experiences.

Instead of focusing on theory alone, FFI creates environments where participants actively practice communication, empathy, and problem-solving. The result is a learning experience that is deeply personal, highly collaborative, and designed to extend far beyond the duration of any single program.

Graduates don’t just leave with new skills, they leave with relationships, confidence, and a stronger sense of how to engage with the world around them.

Programs Built on Immersive Learning

FFI’s programs are designed to be hands-on, relationship-driven experiences that help young people grow as leaders while working closely with peers from around the world.

Across its offerings, participants engage in a mix of structured learning and real-world application, including:

Youth leadership development programs: These focus on core skills like communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making. Participants take part in workshops, group challenges, and facilitated reflection designed to help them understand how they lead and how they can grow.

International exchange experiences: A central part of FFI’s work is bringing together youth from different countries into shared environments where cultural exchange happens naturally. Through everyday interaction, participants learn how to build trust, navigate differences, and collaborate across cultures.

Service and community-based learning: Many programs include service projects that encourage participants to apply what they’re learning in real-world settings. These experiences reinforce the idea that leadership is not just personal development, it’s about contributing to something larger than yourself.

Ongoing leadership development and alumni engagement: FFI also supports continued growth beyond initial programs, helping over 2,000 global alumni stay connected and engaged through leadership opportunities, mentorship, and continued learning experiences.

Across all programs, the emphasis stays consistent: learning by doing, leading through connection, and growing through experience.

Learning Through Lived Experience

What sets FFI apart is how intentionally it uses shared experience as the foundation for learning. Participants are placed in environments where collaboration is necessary from day one; where communication, patience, and understanding are not optional, but essential.

Through group activities, guided discussions, and immersive daily interaction, young people learn how to work with others who may think, speak, or see the world differently than they do.

These experiences often challenge assumptions and build empathy in a way that traditional classroom learning cannot. Over time, participants begin to see leadership less as authority and more as the ability to listen, adapt, and bring people together.

A Global Network Shaped by Shared Experience

One of the most lasting outcomes of FFI’s work is the global network it creates. Participants return home to communities across the world carrying new perspectives and practical leadership skills.

Many go on to lead initiatives in education, civic engagement, nonprofit work, and community development. Others stay connected to peers they met through FFI, continuing to collaborate across borders long after the program ends.

This ongoing connection is a key part of the organization’s impact. Each participant becomes part of a growing network of young leaders who are influencing change in their own communities while staying tied to a shared global experience.

Rooted in New Hampshire, Reaching the World

Friends Forever International operates globally, but its Durham Headquarters and Seacoast NH presence provides an important foundation for its work. The campus serves as a consistent home base where young leaders from around the world come together, learn, and grow through immersive, relationship-driven programs. Over time, investments in the space and its sustainability have helped support long-term international programming while reinforcing a sense of responsibility to both people and place. This practice continues to occur on their international campuses in Annalong, Northern Ireland, and Boom Creek, Belize.

Still, the focus is always outward. Friends Forever International isn’t the final destination, it’s the launch point. Participants take what they learn in their program and carry it back to communities around the world, where the impact continues to grow. In that way, FFI stays grounded in the Seacoast while reaching far beyond it, connecting local places to global change through shared human experience.
