Piscataqua Savings Bank is the proud supporter of over 100 Seacoast area nonprofits. We’re highlighting a few of the nonprofits doing incredible, critical work in our Seacoast community with our Seacoast Spotlight Series. Next up in our spotlight is 3S Artspace.
Tucked along Vaughan Street in Portsmouth, NH, 3S Artspace has become one of the Seacoast’s most beloved creative hubs. Equal parts gallery, performance venue, and community gathering space, it’s the kind of place where you can see a live concert one night, explore a contemporary art exhibit the next, and leave every time feeling a little more inspired. Warm, welcoming, and always evolving, 3S reflects the spirit of Seacoast, NH itself: curious, creative, and deeply community-driven.
From Vision to Venue
3S Artspace was founded in 2011 with an ambitious goal: to create a multidisciplinary arts venue that would bring innovative programming and meaningful cultural experiences to the region. In its early years, the organization operated as a “nomadic” arts presenter, hosting pop-up exhibitions, performances, and events across different locations on the Seacoast. This grassroots approach helped build a loyal following and demonstrated the strong appetite for contemporary arts programming in the area.
In 2015, that vision became a permanent reality when 3S opened its dedicated space on Vaughan Street. The building was thoughtfully designed to support a wide range of artistic disciplines, including visual art, music, film, and community dialogue. Today, the venue includes a main gallery, lobby gallery, performance space, retail shop, and an on-site restaurant partner, a space intentionally designed to welcome artists, audiences, and ideas from all walks of life.
A Mission Rooted in Curiosity and Community
At its core, 3S Artspace is guided by a simple mission: Curiosity. Creativity. Community. The organization aims to present contemporary arts experiences that spark conversation, encourage diverse perspectives, and foster meaningful connections among audiences and artists alike.
Rather than positioning art as something exclusive or intimidating, 3S embraces an open and inclusive approach. Programming often explores timely social themes, cultural dialogue, and innovative storytelling, creating space for both reflection and discovery. This mission-driven focus is part of what sets the organization apart: it’s not just about showcasing art, but about creating experiences that engage people on a deeper level.
Programming and Offerings
One of the most distinctive aspects of 3S Artspace is the variety of programming it offers throughout the year. Visitors can expect a dynamic calendar that keeps things fresh and engaging, no matter how often they attend.
The gallery spaces feature rotating contemporary exhibitions from local, regional, and nationally-based artists, often highlighting bold concepts and thought-provoking installations. These exhibits invite viewers to slow down, observe, and interact with art in a meaningful way.
The performance venue hosts an equally diverse lineup, including live music, comedy shows, film screenings, dance performances, panel discussions, and special events. The flexible layout allows the space to transform easily, making it equally suited for an intimate acoustic set or a high-energy concert.
Beyond performances and exhibitions, 3S also offers:
- Community talks and creative workshops.
- Private event rentals for weddings, meetings, and celebrations.
- A curated shop featuring handmade and artist-designed goods.
- Collaborative events with local organizations and creators.
This mix of offerings helps ensure that there is truly something for everyone, from longtime arts enthusiasts to first-time visitors simply looking for a unique night out.
Supporting Artists and the Local Creative Economy
3S Artspace plays a vital role in supporting both emerging and established artists. By providing a professional platform for exhibitions and performances, the organization helps creatives share their work with broader audiences while contributing to the region’s growing cultural ecosystem.
The venue also prioritizes fair artist compensation and thoughtful curation, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability within the arts. For many local artists and performers, 3S represents not just a venue, but a trusted partner in their creative journey.
How to Support and Get Involved
As a nonprofit organization, community involvement is essential to the continued success of 3S Artspace. Fortunately, there are many ways for individuals and businesses to show their support.
Attending events, exhibitions, and performances is one of the most direct ways to contribute while also enjoying everything the space has to offer. Membership programs provide additional perks and help sustain year-round programming. Donations and sponsorships further support artist opportunities, educational initiatives, and accessible arts experiences in Portsmouth.
Volunteering is another meaningful way to get involved. From assisting at events to helping behind the scenes, volunteers play an important role in maintaining the welcoming and community-focused atmosphere that 3S is known for.
A Space That Brings People Together
In a city known for its rich arts scene, 3S Artspace stands out as a place where creativity feels approachable, inclusive, and alive. It’s where music, visual art, conversation, and community all intersect, often in ways that spark new ideas and unexpected connections.
Whether you’re stopping in for a gallery visit, catching a live performance, or simply looking for a space that celebrates the power of art in everyday life, 3S offers something truly special. And in a region that values both tradition and innovation, it continues to be a reminder that the arts aren’t just entertainment, they’re a vital part of what keeps a community thriving.
