Here for Good Since 1877

When you’ve been somewhere for 149 years, you get pretty attached.

We’ve always been more than a bank. We’re your neighbor, your kid’s Little League coach, the familiar face who actually remembers your name without looking at a screen. You’ve been our customers for generations — and if you run a business here, we’ve probably been yours too. We care about this community because we live in it. When you love where you live, keeping it strong isn’t a strategy. It’s just how you were raised.

Here since before “local” was a selling point.

When Piscataqua Savings Bank opened its doors in 1877, Portsmouth looked very different — but our values haven’t changed. As a mutual savings bank, we answer to our customers and our community, not to shareholders. That’s given us the freedom to do what’s right, not just what’s profitable — and we’ve been doing it ever since. In that time, we’ve helped generations of Seacoast families buy their first homes, backed businesses that became neighborhood fixtures, and stood beside our community through every economic season. We’re not going anywhere. There’s no place we’d rather be.

We don’t just talk about community. We invest in it.

In 2019, Piscataqua became one of only two banks in New Hampshire to earn Certified B Corporation status — a rigorous, independent verification that we meet the highest standards for social and environmental impact. It confirmed what our customers already knew: every dollar deposited here stays on the Seacoast, reinvested in the businesses, families, and organizations that make this place worth living in. We support more than 115 local nonprofits each year, from arts institutions and schools to housing advocates and social service providers. When you bank with us, you’re not just making a smart financial move. You’re helping fund the work that keeps this community strong.

“By showing up to participate in the essential activities like setting up and taking down tables and chairs, welcoming guests with a smile and coffee, preparing and serving food, washing dishes, etc, Piscataqua Savings Bank volunteers add huge value to the effort, and demonstrate their commitment to making a hands-on difference for the Seacoast community. And on top of all that, through its significant financial contribution to Common Table for food and supplies, Piscataqua Savings Bank plays a truly important direct role in ensuring that tasty and nutritious lunches can be made every Thursday – including this past Christmas and New Year’s Day!”

Support

It’s not “Can’t I help you.” It’s “Hi Samantha, would Murphy like a treat?”

What makes Piscataqua different isn’t a product or a rate — it’s the people. Our team lives in this community, banks in this community, and has a genuine stake in how things turn out here. That means when you walk through our door, you get someone who’s paying attention — not reading from a script, not pushing something that doesn’t fit, not disappearing once the paperwork is signed. Some of our customers have been with us for generations. Others opened their first account last week. Either way, you get the same thing: someone who cares about you and your little dog, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Here for Good since 1877” mean?

Piscataqua Savings Bank has been a steady, trusted presence in the Seacoast community since 1877, and we’re committed to staying that way. “Here for Good” reflects both our longevity and our purpose: we’re here to do good for the people and places that make our community home. Whether you’re opening your first account, financing a home, or looking for a bank whose values match your own, choosing Piscataqua means your money stays in the community you love.

What makes Piscataqua Savings Bank different from other banks?

A lot, actually. We’re a mutual savings bank, which means we have no shareholders. Our profits stay in the community. We’re also one of the first banks in New Hampshire to earn Certified B Corporation status — a rigorous, third-party verification that we meet the highest standards for social and environmental performance. But beyond the credentials, the difference is in the day-to-day: our team knows your name, our president keeps an open-door policy (literally), and every decision we make is guided by what’s best for our customers and our community — not a quarterly earnings report.

How does Piscataqua support the local community?

In more ways than most people realize. We financially support over 115 Seacoast nonprofits each year, from arts organizations and schools to affordable housing advocates and social service providers. Our team volunteers, sponsors local events, and participates in community initiatives throughout the year. And because we’re a mutual savings bank, reinvesting in the community isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s built into our model. When you bank with us, you’re directly contributing to that impact.

How do I get started with Piscataqua Savings Bank?

We’d love to welcome you. Stop by our branch at 15 Pleasant Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, give us a call, or explore our products and services at piscataqua.com. Whether you’re looking to open a checking account, apply for a mortgage, or talk through your savings goals, our team is ready to help — with no pressure and no runaround. Just honest guidance from people who genuinely care about your financial future and the future of this community.
