Piscataqua Savings Bank is the proud supporter of over 100 Seacoast area nonprofits. We’re highlighting a few of the nonprofits doing incredible, critical work in our Portsmouth area community with our Seacoast Spotlight Series. Next up in our spotlight is Lydia’s House of Hope.

Located in Somersworth, New Hampshire, Lydia’s House of Hope stands as a powerful example of what long-term compassion and structured support can accomplish. Serving the broader Seacoast NH region, including surrounding communities in southern Maine and the greater Dover/Rochester area, the organization is more than a shelter. It is a transformational residential program focused on breaking cycles of homelessness and generational poverty for women and children.

Founded under Seeds of Faith, Lydia’s House of Hope was created with a clear mission: to move families from crisis to stability, and ultimately toward independence. The program officially opened its doors in 2017 after years of community support, fundraising, and planning rooted in a desire to address homelessness at its core rather than as a temporary condition.

A Structured Path from Crisis to Independence

Unlike emergency shelters that provide short-term relief, Lydia’s House of Hope operates as a highly structured, faith-based, year-long residential program designed specifically for women and their children. Residents typically commit to a 12-month journey that combines housing stability with intensive life skills development, counseling, and accountability.

Within the program, participants work closely with case managers to build individualized plans tailored to their needs and goals. These plans often include job readiness training, budgeting education, parenting support, communication skills, and recovery resources. The goal is not just to provide a safe place to stay, but to equip women with the tools needed to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

The facility itself, located at 21 Grand Street in Somersworth, NH, accommodates up to 25 residents in a supervised residential setting. It includes shared living spaces, a commercial kitchen, learning areas, and counseling support, creating an environment that balances structure with dignity and care.

Serving Somersworth and the Seacoast NH Region

While rooted in Somersworth, Lydia’s House of Hope plays an important role across the Seacoast New Hampshire region. Many residents come from surrounding communities such as Dover, Rochester, Portsmouth, and nearby southern Maine towns, reflecting the widespread need for stable housing and support services across the region.

Homelessness and housing insecurity in Seacoast NH often intersect with challenges such as addiction recovery, unemployment, domestic instability, and generational poverty. Lydia’s House of Hope addresses these challenges through long-term programming rather than short-term assistance, aiming to create lasting change for families who have struggled to find consistent support elsewhere.

Building Skills for Real-World Independence

A defining feature of Lydia’s House of Hope is its emphasis on practical, everyday life skills. Residents participate in ongoing programming that prepares them for independent living, including financial literacy, job interview preparation, cooking, parenting education, and personal accountability.

The structure of the program encourages consistency and routine, helping residents develop habits that support long-term stability. In addition, residents participate in ongoing individual counseling and group-based support sessions designed to provide emotional and psychological reinforcement as they work through trauma, recovery, and personal growth.

By the end of the program, residents are expected to leave with a stronger foundation for self-sufficiency, including employment readiness, housing plans, and improved family stability. Graduates often transition into more independent living arrangements, including supportive housing options connected through the organization.

A Mission Rooted in Community and Compassion

At its core, Lydia’s House of Hope is driven by a simple but powerful belief: every woman and child deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity and purpose. The organization emphasizes not just survival, but transformation, helping residents move from “homelessness to wholeness,” a phrase often used to describe its mission across the Greater Seacoast area.

This work is supported by volunteers, donors, and community partners who help sustain programs without reliance on federal or state funding. Local engagement is essential, reflecting the broader Seacoast NH spirit of community support and collaboration.

Lasting Impact in Somersworth and Beyond

Since its founding, Lydia’s House of Hope has served hundreds of women and children, many of whom have gone on to achieve stable housing, employment, and renewed family stability. The organization continues to expand its reach and services, strengthening its role as a critical resource in the Seacoast New Hampshire social support network.

In a region where housing insecurity continues to be a growing concern, Lydia’s House of Hope offers something deeper than temporary relief. It offers structure, education, accountability, and hope. From Somersworth to the greater Seacoast NH region, its impact is seen not only in the lives of its residents, but in the broader community it helps stabilize and strengthen.
